In the Living Lab Scheveningen, the municipality explores digital innovations through small-scale research projects. However, for visitors to the boulevard, it is not always immediately visible that a Living Lab exists, that projects are being carried out, and that data is being collected through these initiatives.Using an Augmented Reality (AR) app, various activities within the Living Lab Scheveningen are made visible in a playful and interactive way, encouraging users to reflect on the opportunities and limits of digitalisation in the city.

The municipality aims to be transparent about the activities taking place within the Living Lab. It also seeks to increase public engagement and build support. Therefore, the municipality is exploring ways to inform and involve visitors to the boulevard.
An AR app offers a playful way to get to know the Living Lab and learn more about the projects being carried out there.
As part of this use case, the municipality explored how to best reach visitors on the boulevard. An interactive approach was chosen, using the mobile phone as an accessible and user-friendly tool.
In 2022, a first version of the app was tested using QR codes on smart light poles during tours and events. In early 2023, further development began, resulting in an updated version of the app released midway through the year.
The new version made it possible to take a self-guided interactive tour without the need for QR codes. It also introduced quiz questions and activities that encouraged visitors to think about the opportunities and limitations of a smart city. By the end of May 2023, the app was available in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
