Smart Waste Bin

Introduction to the Use Case

Waste management along the busy Scheveningen boulevard has been a major challenge for years. With millions of visitors each year, the municipality faces overflowing bins and increasing litter during the high season. This requires extra effort and smart solutions to keep the boulevard clean and welcoming.

This use case explores how smart waste bins can make waste management more efficient and sustainable. The bins compress waste up to five times its original volume, which means they fill up less quickly and help reduce litter on the streets.

The bins are equipped with a system that indicates when they are nearly full, allowing the municipality to plan emptying more efficiently. They run on solar energy and feature a durable protective plate that prevents damage and discoloration.

Why the Use Case

This use case was initiated because the existing waste bins filled up quickly and were not resistant to the coastal climate, causing them to rust or break down. The goal was to reduce litter, avoid placing extra bins during the high season, and gain better insight into waste flows. By using data-driven management (IGW), the municipality can monitor the capacity of the bins and predict when emptying is needed.

Expectations and Learning Objectives

An important learning objective of this use case is to demonstrate that smart waste bins can significantly reduce litter along the boulevard. As a result, both the actual amount of waste and the perceived cleanliness of the area are expected to improve, in line with the touristic character of Scheveningen.

As a result, the municipality will need fewer waste bins, be better protected against vandalism, and manage waste more efficiently and sustainably.

How the Use Case Was Facilitated

This use case was made possible through the collaboration between the Scheveningen district office, the Waste & Cleanliness Policy Department, the Haagse Straatorganisatie, and the Living Lab Scheveningen. The smart waste bins were supplied by Mr. Fill.
