The Atrium The Hague is the meeting centre in City Hall for residents of The Hague and visitors to the city. Each year, dozens of cultural, social and educational exhibitions and events are organised here. But how many people actually walk past an exhibition in the Atrium The Hague each day? And how many of them truly stop to look?
The Municipality, in collaboration with Stichting Atrium City Hall, is investigating how visitor numbers can be monitored in a privacy-respecting way and in line with the Atrium’s regulations. The research focuses on how many people visit, which exhibition elements attract the most attention, and how visitors experience the exhibitions. Discussions with multiple partners indicate strong interest in these insights.
In September 2024, the first sensor tests were launched during the Smart@Sea Expo ‘Welcome to the Smart City’ (bottom left photo). Anonymous data on visitor numbers was displayed in real time on a screen within the exhibition. In addition, visitors actively contributed by helping to test the design and content of the questionnaires.
From 11 November to 6 December 2024, a follow-up experiment took place in collaboration with the Archaeology Department, during which visitors could view the exhibition ‘Beneath the Binnenhof' (top right photo). During this exhibition, privacy-friendly sensors were also used to record on a daily basis how many people passed the exhibition and how often they paused at display cases or information panels. In addition, visitors could share their opinions about the exhibition and their experiences at Atrium City Hall via two digital feedback kiosks, available in both Dutch and English.
In the future, this technology may also offer opportunities to monitor crowd levels at public service counters in real time, providing insight into waiting times and enabling further optimisation of service delivery.
