Use cases

What is a use case

A use case is a temporary and clearly defined pilot in which a municipality, often in collaboration with partners, tests a digital or innovative solution in public space. The purpose is to assess whether and how such solutions contribute to public goals, such as safety, livability, sustainability, and inclusivity.

In The Hague, various use cases are being carried out, including within Living Lab Scheveningen. The implementation of these use cases is coordinated by the Expertise Centre for Digital Innovation & Smart City of the Municipality of The Hague. Through joint learning and experimentation, the municipality works towards responsible innovation and a smart, sustainable future for The Hague and the South Holland region.

Registration System Scheveningen Harbor

With the Scheveningen Harbor Registration System (RSH), an innovative system is developed to detect, recognize, and register vessels entering and leaving. This uses an intelligent video management analysis system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Crowd Safety Manager

The Crowd Safety Manager is a 3D map that provides insight into how busy it is in Scheveningen by cleverly combining various anonymous data sources. The map shows traffic data, such as traffic counts, public transport data and the occupation of parking garages. Anonymous location data of visitors is also shown.

Energy Justice

Can a sustainable transition to clean energy be made that also benefits low-income households? With a fair plan without fixed subsidies, where the right to energy, local management, and a fair share of the benefits are central?

Dynamic Information Board

How can beach visitors be informed quickly, clearly, and simply about risks on the beach and in the sea, so they stay more alert, stay safe, and accidents or dangerous situations are avoided as much as possible?

Edumersive – Interactive Augmented Reality App

Through an Augmented Reality (AR) app, various activities within the Living Lab Scheveningen are made visible in a playful and interactive way, and users of the application are actively made to think about the opportunities and limits of digitization in the city.

Smart Beach Grid

Local sustainable energy production is growing rapidly and driving the energy transition forward. At the same time, the one-way electricity grid is becoming overloaded, making new connections difficult. This hinders further sustainability efforts. Smart energy management is needed to make better use of the grid.

Smart Waste Bin

Waste management in large cities has long been a major challenge. This use case explores how smart self-compacting bins can make waste management more efficient and sustainable, helping to reduce litter, prevent overflowing bins, and ultimately create a cleaner boulevard.

The Wave

The Wave is a smart light pole printed from beach sand that can respond to athletes with hundreds of lights. This digital solution encourages people to exercise and provides appropriate lighting that offers a sense of safety, making it valuable for a city.

Crowd Measurements

Scheveningen, known as the busiest seaside resort in the Netherlands, is visited each year by a large number of tourists and day-trippers. Given this ongoing crowding, it is crucial for the municipality to develop and implement effective, privacy-friendly methods for managing crowds.

Circular Solar Panels for the Smart Energy Grid

Sustainable energy is becoming increasingly important. Some solar panels still contain harmful substances. New trials show that it can be done differently, using reusable and clean materials. But how can we make these solutions accessible to everyone in the future?

Drone Detection

The municipality, together with the police, has started a drone detection trial to understand the drones flying over The Hague. The system picks up the radio signals used to control the drones, showing where they are flying. The identity of the drone operator is not visible.

Visitor counts at exhibitions in the City Hall

The municipality, together with the Atrium City Hall Foundation, is exploring how to measure the number of visitors in a privacy-friendly way and within the Atrium's house rules. They also aim to find out which parts of the exhibition are most viewed and how visitors rate the exhibition(s).
