A Safe Smart City
New technology is used more and more to improve safety and quality of life in cities. For example, sensors that detect unrest on the street or data analysis to spot criminal activities. Often, these are separate initiatives, where technical, legal and ethical questions must be addressed again and again.
Within SHIELD, the police and the municipality work together in one physical location on innovations that improve safety in the city. By combining their strengths, successful solutions can be developed faster and scaled up more easily.
Current examples
Current projects in the Living Lab Scheveningen include crowd management, a pilot to detect nitrous oxide use, and automatic detection of boat traffic in the harbor.
Initiatives
Within SHIELD, the following use cases are being developed:

HSD Campus
SHIELD is based at the HSD Campus. Here, companies, government organizations, and knowledge institutions from across the country work together to share knowledge and develop products and services that contribute to a safer world.
Impact Coalition Safety & Security
The goal of SHIELD is to ensure that other cities and police units in the Netherlands can also benefit from the knowledge gained. Through the Impact Coalition Safety & Security , experiences and lessons learned are shared. This national collaboration between municipalities, the police, knowledge institutions, and companies is supported by the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) and Security Delta (HSD).
